Highway 1017

Standoff-Linn, Texas

My mother grew up on a cattle ranch, learning the trade and singing along to cicada song. She made sure her children had the same upbringing

When I first started taking photographs, I had a hard time finding my subject matter. I started playing around with cameras at my grandparents’ home, a cattle ranch in South Texas, and found that it was incredibly easy to create photos in the space.

I would run through the clouds of dust to capture the cattle that waddled by on their way to breakfast. The workers would take me along for their daily tasks and I photographed as they mounted windmills with no harness. As I took pictures around the place both I and my most of my family had grown up, I felt a deeper connection to those who lived there. I was so drawn to the area. I like to credit the ranch with cementing my early passion for photography.
